Fuchsia Pink Jandals.
Fuchsia, a genus primarily consisting of shrubs or small trees, encompasses a diverse array of flowering plants. The first species scientifically described, Fuchsia triphylla, was discovered on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola around 1696–1697 by Charles Plumier, a French Minim monk and botanist, during his third expedition to the Greater Antilles. Plumier paid tribute to the German botanist Leonhart Fuchs (1501–1566) by naming the genus after him.
With approximately 110 recognized species, Fuchsia is predominantly native to South America. However, its distribution extends from Central America to Mexico and from New Zealand to Tahiti. Notably, one New Zealand species, the kōtukutuku (F. excorticata), stands out within the genus for its tree-like growth, reaching heights of 12–15 meters.
Fuchsia leaves typically appear in opposite pairs or in whorls of three to five, characterized by lanceolate shapes with serrated margins. Leaf characteristics vary, with some species being deciduous while others remain evergreen.
Fuchsia flowers, renowned for their ornamental appeal, display a pendulous teardrop shape and bloom profusely throughout the summer and autumn seasons, persisting year-round in tropical climates. Each flower features four long, slender sepals and four shorter, broader petals. Many species attract hummingbirds for pollination with bright red sepals and purple petals. However, flower colors span a wide spectrum, from white to dark red, purple-blue, and orange, with some species exhibiting yellowish tones. Beneath the flower, the ovary gives rise to small berries ranging in color from dark reddish-green to deep red or purple, each containing numerous tiny seeds.
