About Penny

Oh hey! I’m Penny Royal, a Nelson-based Graphic Designer, Surface Pattern Designer and Illustrator but I prefer the term “Creative”. It’s easier to fit onto a business card!

We’ve all had jobs in life that we knew were the wrong fit. I’ve explored everything from Deep Sea Fishing to Waitressing, but my soul needed to create. So, in my 30s and as a Mum of two, I finally listened to that inner cry and completed a Bachelor of Arts and Media degree at NMIT, graduating in 2018. Now I get to follow my passion every day and I’m living my best life.

If you’re looking for someone to tackle your graphic design work, I’d love to help you out. I’m ready to take on creative projects and have a special passion for creating layouts and advertising material for events, products, designs and branding. 

When it comes to Surface Pattern Design, many of my designs are available through the US site Spoonflower but I license my prints too. This started for me as a very addictive hobby many years ago and continues to be a large part of my business. It’s a real thrill when people send me photos of their products using my designs. 

Illustration is really the fun part of my day, whether I am creating a commissioned artwork for a client, or following my own inspirations, any day I get to draw and paint is a good day! I usually use a black pen outline and either add patterning or watercolour to it.

I have been loving creating products with my art on them, especially when I get to wear them, my t-shirts, hoodies, jandals and high top shoes have become my go-to items in my wardrobe. Everybody needs a pink floral pair of shoes right!?

I’ll change up my own themes depending on inspiration and mood; drawing animals, plants, people and even vehicles but if you have a particular project in mind, I’d love to hear from you.
