Kowhai Yellow Jandals
The kōwhai, a cherished native tree in New Zealand, proudly bears the mantle of our unofficial national flower.
Its resplendent yellow blossoms, a hallmark of Spring, burst forth in abundance, creating a vivid contrast amidst the lush greenery of our forests. Adorning our gardens, kōwhai trees are beloved by all.
Sporting small leaflets and occasionally tangled juvenile branches, kōwhai trees begin their journey as seeds in the soil, gradually growing into majestic entities, reaching towering heights of up to 25 meters.
Thriving across a diverse array of habitats throughout New Zealand, from riparian forests to coastal cliffs and inland grey scrub communities, the kōwhai flourishes wherever it takes root.
Native avian species such as the tui, bellbird, kākā, and New Zealand pigeon/kererū/kūkū/kūkupa actively seek out kōwhai trees for sustenance. Feeding on the leaves and flowers, these birds rely on the kōwhai as a vital seasonal nectar source.
In Māori culture, the kōwhai holds a position of utmost reverence, esteemed for its resilient hardwood and extensive medicinal properties.
Note on Shipping:
These items on my website are not items I keep in stock in my office studio in Stoke, Nelson, NZ. They are printed on demand and shipped by my awesome collaboration partners from all over the world. I love print on demand, it means I can offer a huge range of high quality items with no wastage. Nothing is created until you order it, and then it is printed just for you. So the shipping rates are set by them and not something I have any control over.
