This collection was born out of quiet moments escaping adulting in my mum’s garden, while I chased the shade around the garden (and avoided my children!). My mum’s garden has a wild woodlands feel about it rather than a manicured staid atmosphere, and I was inspired by the shapes and lines of the various leaves and flowers. I was equally drawn to the traditional flowers as I was to the ones considered weeds… perhaps because I am myself named after a weed, well a wild herb, pennyroyal.
The shapes and lines in the hydrangeas, convolvulus and ivy were my favorite plants to draw and became the basis for this collection. My favorite way to create is to draw the shapes in black pen first and then add colour afterwards, often with watercolours. But for this collection I digitally coloured all the artwork.
Mum’s Garden Hydrangea Jandals
Hydrangea is derived from Greek and means ‘water vessel’ in reference to the shape of its seed capsules. The earlier name, Hortensia, is a Latinised version of the French given name Hortense, honoring French astronomer and mathematician Nicole-Reine Hortense Lepaute.
In most species, the flowers are white, but in others (notably H. macrophylla), they can be blue, red, pink, light purple, or dark purple. In these species, floral color change occurs due to the presence of aluminum ions which are available or tied up depending upon the soil pH
